I'd like to call this "food for thought"
Do you think balance exists?
I've chatted with a friend about this before, who doesn't believe it does. I also read (I think) an article or post by Rachel Hollis where she also says it doesn't (it might not have been her but some influencer I stalk on Instagram).
Personally, I'd argue that balance does exist.
However, that could depend on what balance looks like to you.
My friend feels like balance is doing all the things each day and in equal parts.
I don't.
I look at balance on a more weekly basis (for the most part) - some days you might get a lot of work done but only get to see the kids for bath time and bed. The next you might end up spending a wonderful day with the kids but only got two emails out. Those two days combined to me say 'balance'
What does balance look like to you?
Something that really hit me the other day, perhaps it's not that balance doesn't exist but we're doing too much. Seriously. Think about everything you're doing, make a list even. I guarantee it's too much. Balance can't exist if your plate is so full you need a second or even third plate to juggle it all (says the person with 3 jobs).
So while I believe balance does exist I also know that my plate is too full for me to accomplish it. Let's look at my every day roles:
- Human
- Wife
- Mom to toddler
- Friend
- Pregnant (with twins)
- Full time job at Zaniac
- Business Owner
- MacKid Publisher
Do you want to know which one suffers first?
If you guessed human, you're correct. My self care game essentially doesn't exist. Time to myself, what is that? Hanging out with friends, I wish. I'm not living a balanced life because my plate is unrealistic. I'm actually changing that very soon. What does your every day roles look like? What does your every day list look like?
So when did things change? Or have they always been like this?
Are we trying to keep up with the Joneses?
Is it the Pinterest boards of perfection and filtered Instagram photos?
Our past (raises hand)?
Would love to hear your thoughts on this!
Perhaps I need to have a monthly meet up to talk about stuff like this cause I love hearing other people's perspectives. Seriously, though, if that's something you'd be interested in doing with me, email me!
In the meantime while we're pondering life's questions, check out all the awesome events happening the rest of this week and weekend (over 30 on Saturday alone)!
P.S. Shout out to one of my subscribers I met at the Y last week dropping off my son. I complimented her glasses and she responded, "Thank you. I like your articles." I'll be honest I was confused and thought she had me mixed up with someone else. She quickly picked up on my confusion as she filled in with "Macaroni Kid" Thank you for reading and saying "Hi!" Look forward to seeing you again!
Always,
Dana
