A Note From Your Publisher

By Dana Hall November 13, 2019

Last week we got a new couch because the current one we had was not only beat up but it sits three people with little to no stretch room.  We are about to be a family of five plus three critters (two dogs and a cat) who all enjoy a place on the couch.

While getting a new couch was on my list of twin prep it wasn't at the top and I thought I had already found one - it was just a matter of figuring out how to get it from Ikea to our house.  Then one morning I was looking through some flyers we received in the mail, which I usually throw away without even looking and came across a really good deal on couches. Hours later I was online purchasing one of those couches.

A few days later I was purchasing a new carpet.

While also thinking about throw pillows and a new comforter and carpet for the bedroom...

I'm an all or nothing type of person.  I like things to feel complete.  Having a new couch surrounded by all our old stuff doesn't feel complete to me.

So it wasn't a surprise when I found myself this past weekend hitting up a few stores to check out pillows and throws on the hunt to complete our new living room look.  The hunt continued online through the weekend.

Finally, Monday it hit me that making rash decisions or getting things I'm not particularly in love with isn't smart and ends up being a huge waste of time, energy and money.  All things I'm working really hard to be conscious of.

I'm not entirely sure why I have this strong need for things to feel complete.  Perhaps it's the type A personality and checking something off my list or maybe it's something I can comfortably have control over - a topic for my therapist to unravel.  In the meantime I've realized I can change my mindset about it.

Instead of feeling like the house isn't finished I'm going to embrace the anticipation and excitement of finding the perfect pieces to make it complete. Whether that's tomorrow, next month or several months from now I know at the end of the day It'll be more satisfying and I'll be happy I waited.

P.S. That carpet I ordered, I ended up cancelling a week later because deep down I wasn't in love with it and an even better, more beautiful and fitting one came along that was $100 less (bonus)!

Always,
